Comprehensive diagnostic and/or prognostic evaluation of hematologic neoplasia

Special Instructions

Must include clinical/laboratory information, clinical hematological diagnosis, and a recent CBC or whole blood in lavender-top (EDTA) tube.

Test Includes

May include Morphologic Evaluation, Flow cytometry, Cytogenetics, and other relevant diagnostic and/or prognostic tests per opinion of Reviewing Pathologist. FISH and/or molecular studies; Tests ordered by Integrated Oncology Pathologists.

Specimen

Bone marrow aspirate clot and/or biopsy, bone marrow aspirate smears, and whole blood smear

Volume

2-5 mL bone marrow; at least 1 cm core of bone marrow (complete specimen), bilateral if for staging of lymphoma

Container

Bone marrow core biopsy, clot and/or particles: 10% NBF container; bone marrow aspirate smears and/or touch preparations: slide mailer

Storage Instructions

Bone marrow core biopsy, clot and/or particles: Store ambient and ship with a cool pack. Bone marrow aspirate smears and/or touch preparations: Store refrigerated and ship with a cool pack.

No marrow obtained

Collection

Smeared slides should be prepared and labeled at the bedside . Biopsy and clot are placed in fixative. Bone marrow smears for enzyme histochemistry must be fixed immediately in 10% neutral buffered formalin, absolute methyl alcohol, or 40% formalin vapor. Fixative container must be labeled with patient's full name, room number, date, and time and the fixative employed.
